Gender and sexual orientation based discrimination: a survey in Italy

Gender and sexual orientation based discrimination: a survey in Italy

Italy is showing a growing interest in gender-related themes even though a hard work has still to be done. Our survey includes more than 1,000 people of any extractions, education, gender and sexual orientation. More than 40% cannot identify their own gender-identity and more than 35% cannot define their own affective orientation both because they don’t know how to describe it or they don’t know the terminology. According to the survey 22% have been discriminated and 12% have been assaulted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Of these people only 10% has told the employer or the police what happened. Of all the complaints only 2,5% have been given a follow up by the Authorities (or the company) and measures have been taken. We strongly believe ignorance is at the base of the incapacity of understanding, preventing, fighting the phenomenon.
Italy has a strongly religion-based culture and introducing variables has always been difficult. The survey is still open and will show more precise data over the time. We hope that in the very near future our work could help improve the situation reducing the verbal and physical assaults as well as discriminations everywhere.
